Song of the Nightingale

A graceful, elegantly crafted piece...about the collision between contemporary materialism and nature.
— New York Classical Review
Melisa Tien’s clever libretto has taken Andersen’s folk tale and adapted it to suit modern times. Unlike current ‘adaptations’ of classic works that make no logical sense, her libretto makes perfect sense.

Song of the Nightingale

A co-commission between On Site Opera and Brookfield Properties Arts & Culture, this new opera by librettist Melisa Tien and composer Lisa DeSpain is a contemporary adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Nightingale”.

This modern-day fairy tale tells the story of a collector looking to gather up the world’s most beautiful objects.

Performances took place September 8-30 across three of Brookfield Properties’ public spaces—Brooklyn Commons, Manhattan West, and Brookfield Place—and were free of charge and accessible to all.
